Photo Editing Practice

So, for this assignment I realized a couple things. The first was that I have no patience when selecting things and that my expectations for poor Photoshop are far too high. I kept just wanting it to "know" what I wanted selected, and figured out after a while that using a variety of selection tools on one project can help quite a bit. Also, Lisa's and this Adobe TV tutorial on selecting really helped A LOT-

I found his trick of painting within a selection really helpful, especially when I was dealing with selecting fine points. My selections are definitely not perfect, but I plan on practicing a lot more in the future!

This is one of the images I started with, taken on the top of half dome in Yosemite.

I added a picture of a heli coming to pick us up...wouldn't that've been nice..I also tweaked the color balance, saturation, shadows and contrast to try to make the end result look a little more realistic.

This is the original picture that I used. I took it of myself in a plane in Alaska. Behind me is the Rainbow Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park.

This is the edited version. I cropped out the glacier and put in a photo from Hawaii and my boyfriend being weird. I also manipulated saturation and contrast.

  1. Nice job, can barely tell that it is edited in the thumbnail, even if I do suppose it would be odd to see some guy jumping like that into a plane... anyway, nice job. Having the different background and your boyfriend there certainly stands out! Also, the contrast change did make the picture warmer, which I think looks good.
I do think that changing the color contrast on the first picture worked out well and ended well. The addition of the helicopter was nice too, it seems like you like aircraft!

  2. I love the second image. At first you don't realize how odd it is, but then you glance again and realize that the person outside the plane would have to be flying. Your choice to change the saturation and contrast was a good one and you got the levels just right. :)

  3. Kristin you did a great job with these. The difference on the color on the first one is great, and you can't even tell it was edited. The secone one was just hilarious, but a great job with that one as well.

  4. These are amazing! It gives me something to aspire to! I also having a creative selection block when it comes to manipulating photos or picking out the right ones. You did not have that trouble! Your choices were fantastic!

  7. Kristin...I think you did a terrific job and seem to have an awesome working knowledge of photoshop and the functions...I think the first photo edit was so realistic look...you can't even tell if you hadn't told us that the helicopter was placed there. The second photo...how fun! Nicely done.

  8. Awesome first picture. Very cool addition with the chopper. The first time I saw it, I completely thought it was there and you had just taken a before and after picture. The other picture has amazing editing too, just not a natural looking. Way to go.

  9. Love both of these. You are too humble, your selecting is very good for a beginner. You'll learn a few tricks to help you clean up selections. My fave is: select with lasso, then select the little bit of background with magic wand and delete it (make sure the background color is white). This gives you a cleaner selection and with the eraser tool you should be able to clean up the edges your selection didn't get.
